Ex-Aucklander’s novel attracts $1m-plus advance and BBC film deal.


A self-taught late bloomer’s seven-figure publishing deal shows that literary success past 40 is no pipe dream.

When Deborah McKinlay’s New York agent rang her one Friday evening and told her she’d just signed a seven-figure deal for McKinlay’s new novel, the New Zealand-born author said it would probably be a good idea if she left her home in England and got on a plane. The agent, the magnificently named Alexandra Machinist, burst out laughing. “Sweetie,” she said, “when you do a deal like this, we come to you.” McKinlay, whose voice after decades in Britain holds only the faintest traces of Mairangi Bay, says Machinist – “fast-talking, hard-working, like New York personified” …
